Prunedale is an unincorporated community in North Monterey County, spread over about 46 square miles of hills and canyons. The 2020 Census counted 18,885 people here. Ranchettes sit off roads like Crazy Horse Canyon Road and San Miguel Canyon Road. Highway 101 runs through Prunedale, and the fire district's Station 2 sits off it at Pesante Road.
The county's wildfire plan says North County grass fires spread fast in severe weather, then slow under closed oak canopy. It also flags stands of manzanita, and eucalyptus trees that can torch and spread embers. Its North County section names Royal Oaks, Pesante Canyon, Mallory Canyon and Long Valley for complex fire problems. CAL FIRE's fire perimeter records map several fires inside Prunedale, the largest about 60 acres in 2018.
Coast live oak resists fire better than other California oaks and has the thickest bark. The fuel is the brush underneath. The masticating head on our compact track loader grinds that brush and small trees into mulch where they stand. The brush mower cuts the open grass, and the oaks stay standing.
On the state's fire hazard maps, most of Prunedale is State Responsibility Area, rated High or Moderate. There, California's defensible space law, Public Resources Code 4291, applies to every building, whatever the rating. The law asks for 100 feet of defensible space, or out to the property line. Monterey County's fire code applies that law or the county code, whichever is stricter.
The North County Fire Protection District inspects properties in Prunedale, Las Lomas, Royal Oaks and Oak Hills. CAL FIRE's San Benito-Monterey Unit covers the State Responsibility Area here. The district's weed abatement standard asks for brush cleared 100 feet around buildings, landscaping aside. Monterey County's guidelines add a rule for the first 30 feet: dry grass cut to 4 inches at most.
Under tree canopies, the county asks for plants to be cut back with the roots left to hold the soil. The masticating head works that way: it grinds the brush down and leaves the roots in the ground. Our defensible space clearing is sized to the notice or report in hand, and the district's inspector does the checking.
The district's weed abatement page says rural land here means clearing excess weeds every year. On large lots and unimproved parcels, its standard caps cut stubble at 2 inches. Lots that front a public road get cleared to the edge of the road.
If the weeds grow back into a fire hazard, the standard calls for a second cut. We mow grass and weeds with the brush mower, and the masticating head grinds any brush into mulch. With seasonal weed abatement, the regrowth gets cut on a schedule.
The district's standard also asks for driveway access kept clear 12 feet wide and 15 feet high. We clear the brush that crowds the edges of a driveway or a canyon road. Branches hanging over the drive are a tree service's work.
Since July 1, 2021, sellers in High or Very High fire hazard zones owe buyers defensible space documentation. The district says State Responsibility Area homes in both zone classes need the inspection. Check your parcel on CAL FIRE's fire hazard severity zone viewer before you list.
The district does these inspections, and it says one can take 7 to 10 days from the request. If the property falls short, a deficiency report lists what to fix. We clear the brush and grass that the report calls out. If the fixes are not done by closing, the buyer can agree in writing to finish within a year.
County code requires a permit to remove oaks and madrones 6 inches or more across in inland North County. The trunk is measured 2 feet above the ground. Some manzanita brush around Monterey Bay is maritime chaparral, a habitat with rare native plants. Clearing that touches sensitive habitat may need county approval, and the planning office answers those questions.
