The Pajaro Valley floor and the brushy hills around it

Watsonville sits on the north bank of the Pajaro River, on valley soil long farmed for berries. The city's trail plan describes the Watsonville Slough system along with Corralitos and Salsipuedes creeks. Willow, cottonwood, alder and sycamore line those waterways.

The county's 2025 hazard mitigation plan puts most of the city at low wildfire risk. The risk climbs at the edges. The state's 2025 map shows High and Moderate zones along the city's edges, mostly on the west and northwest. That is where homes meet grassland and foothills.

Two fires in 2008 burned close by. In June the Trabing Fire burned nearly 600 acres near Trabing Road, just northwest of town. CAL FIRE's fire records list 75 structures destroyed. A month earlier, the Summit Fire burned about 4,200 acres in the mountains north of Corralitos.

Who enforces defensible space in and around Watsonville?

Inside city limits, the Watsonville Fire Department handles fire prevention. The city's fire code calls for a firebreak at least 30 feet around buildings, or to the property line. When state law or a local rule requires it, that zone can reach 100 feet.

Reports of overgrown weeds and brush inside the city go to the Community Development Department. The city's property maintenance code counts weed-infested or overgrown vegetation that creates a fire hazard as a violation. If the city abates a nuisance itself, the cost can go on the property tax bill.

Outside the city, much of the land falls to the Pajaro Valley Fire Protection District or Santa Cruz County Fire. CAL FIRE staffs both under contract. In 2025 the Pajaro Valley district applied to fold into Santa Cruz County Fire. Check the agency name on any notice you get.

The Pajaro Valley district posts CAL FIRE's zones on its website. Zone 1 is the first 30 feet from a building, and Zone 2 runs out to 100 feet. In Zone 2, annual grass is cut to 4 inches or less. The agency inspects, and we do the defensible space clearing around a home to that standard.

Weed abatement and burning rules on Watsonville lots

Open burning of vegetation and weeds is not allowed inside Watsonville city limits. Outside the city, the fire agency sets the rules and may require a burn permit. Our masticating head grinds brush into mulch where it stands, and the mulch stays on the ground as cover.

On ranch land, a fire break along a ridge is a strip of mowed grass or masticated brush. A fire can slow there, and firefighters get room to work. The state's defensible space rules say to avoid heavy equipment in and around streams and seasonal drainages.
