Weed abatement is cutting the annual grass and weeds that dry out on the Central Coast by early summer. Cruz Land Management is based in Seaside on the Monterey Peninsula. Most notices arrive in spring, and the key dates fall between May and July. The Monterey Fire Department began its 2026 vacant lot inspections on May 1 in Monterey, Pacific Grove and Carmel-by-the-Sea. The Monterey County Regional Fire District covers much of the Carmel Valley and the Highway 68 corridor. Its wildland flyer asks owners to finish by June 1.
Marina Fire runs its weed abatement inspections from April through July. Up the coast, the city of Santa Cruz contacts vacant lot owners in early April. Its deadline is May 15, and the Fire Marshal can move it with the weather. Inside Salinas city limits, code enforcement lists overgrown weeds among the violations it checks for.

The regional fire district's standards list grass, weeds, vines and brush as hazardous vegetation. That district and Monterey Fire both want grass cut to 4 inches or less. North County Fire, which covers Prunedale and Castroville, wants stubble no taller than 2 inches on large or unimproved lots. We mow the lot down to the height your notice sets.
The regional fire district wants the whole parcel done on lots of one acre or less. On bigger parcels, the rule can shrink to a 30-foot strip along the edges. The regional fire district can also require 100 feet of fuel management around buildings. North County Fire wants street frontage cut right to the edge of the street.
Some notices also say what happens to the cut material. North County Fire wants it removed unless it is finely mulched. Monterey Fire lets owners chip and spread it on site. The masticating head grinds brush into mulch where it stands, and the written quote spells out the rest.
One cut does not always last the season. North County Fire's standard says a parcel with second growth must be cut again if it becomes a fire hazard. We can come back for a second cut when the grass returns.
HOAs and commercial properties often have the same roadsides and lot lines to cut every year. That repeat work fits a seasonal vegetation management program. The regional fire district's standards keep the work inside your own property lines.
Some lots need more than a mower. A lot grown over with brush and saplings is lot clearing work. The masticator takes the brush down to mulch, and the lot ends up open and walkable.
